As a flexible packaging supplier, shifting consumer attitudes to plastic is a natural worry for us.  With many of our customers sharing these concerns, we thought it was time to assess the future for this packaging.

The flexible packaging market is due to grow, despite the media frenzy and negative news headlines surrounding plastic. According to a recent market report from Smithers Pira, the future demand for flexible packaging is set to increase across all key markets. The volume of consumer flexible packaging is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 4.1%. This is a huge increase from 27.4 million tonnes in 2017 to 33.5 million tonnes in 2022.

This week, the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) released a great infographic. It summarised the key opportunities for flexible packaging with the emergence of e-commerce, innovation and sustainability trends.

The infographic covers some key reasons why flexible packaging will continue to be a popular option for brands, consumers and retailers. Probably due to its barrier properties and innovations that can help fight food waste and extend shelf life. Moreover, the packaging offers great optimisation for e-commerce packaging.

Furthermore, we believe at this time when our industry is at the forefront of global headlines; it’s the perfect opportunity to discuss the positive changes we can make moving forward. Most importantly, how we can collectively support recycling infrastructure, material development and sustainable innovation.
