Ferguson Dog Food

Pet Planet is a new customer who came to us after a trade recommendation from their pet food packer, when they decided it was time to source fully printed packaging for their Ferguson dog food range. They sought to create a fully customised, visually impactful packaging solution that would resonate with customers, particularly focusing on the Scottish heritage theme that is central to their brand story.

The primary challenge for Law Print was to help the Ferguson team differentiate its product through packaging, while maintaining the practical needs of the dog food, such as moisture retainment and freshness.

The packaging needed to be not only functional but also visually striking to create a strong shelf presence, particularly given the competitive nature of the pet food market.

Law Print worked closely with the independent brand owner from the initial stages of design to the final execution, ensuring that every element of the packaging aligned with their vision. We collaborated with their creative team to bring their ideas to life, focusing on a Scottish theme with powerful visual illustrations. The bold imagery, combined with earthy tones, featured prominent elements of the Scottish countryside landscape, set against a bark-like textured background.

The 2kg bag was designed with a flat bottom, providing stability on shelves while also giving more room for branding elements on all visible surfaces. This makes it perfect for retail environments where standing out is crucial. Meanwhile, the larger 12kg bag was created using a quad seal format, ensuring durability without the need for additional folds. Both bag sizes feature matt varnish, which enhances the premium feel while avoiding glare under store lights.

Flat Bottom Bags have certainly grown in popularity over the years. The variety of closure mechanisms combined with practical improvements to shelf-life, waste and reusability strikes the perfect balance between packaging form and function. Ferguson’s 2kg pack with its single lip zipper is the perfect size for dog owners, allowing for easy transport and storage.

Flexible packaging is an excellent tool for businesses looking to move to more sustainable resources, whilst offering closure and convenience options to their customers. Bags can be printed with Rotogravure up to 10 colours, which was ideal for Ferguson and the illustration work they have gone for. The brand’s Scottish theme stands out beautifully, and the whole design is complemented by the use of metallic ink and spot matt varnish to give a high-quality result.

Pet Planet chose a flexible over-labelling approach for flavour identification. This allowed them to apply different labels for various flavours, while keeping the core design intact. The result was a cost-effective solution that also supported rapid flavour updates without needing to redesign or manufacture entirely new bags for each product variants.

The final design achieved the desired Scottish theme, making the bags visually distinctive and engaging. The use of bark-like textures and powerful imagery gave Ferguson’s packaging a traditional, yet modern look that communicated quality and care for pets.

The new packaging reduced material waste by utilising a single-bag design that could accommodate multiple flavours via the over-labelling process. This streamlines production and minimises excess stock.
