Since being awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2017, Symply Pet Foods have experienced boundless growth with their core pet food brands, Symply, Canagan and Piccolo.

Having supplied the company with packaging for all their core brands, we were naturally tasked again to work on the latest Piccolo range. The team at Symply made a strategic decision to re-position the brand under the Canagan umbrella, with the re-launch designed to support Piccolo’s new luxury look and feel.

After working with the company for a number of years, we were able to offer the pack formats and features they required for the new range concept. The decision was made to focus on the 750g and 1.5Kg sizes, moving away from the ‘bag in the box’ format with cardboard cartons and partially printed bags inside, to a standalone fully printed and shelf ready bag. This not only reduced costs but also helped to streamline the company’s total packaging waste.

Previously, we had worked on the aesthetics of the bags with a special Pearlescent White finish as well as a Matt Varnish, which we developed with the printer and got approved on ink drawdowns. By moving all the bags to fully printed versions, the designs were totally revamped and new functional features, such as easy-open laser scoring, were added to the bags.

The packaging finish was extremely complicated with many elements that had to come together harmoniously. By using the flat bottom pack format, the brand could introduce a single lip style, with zipper and laser scoring. All great convenience features that truly add value to the end consumer. These elements were then combined with the difficult printing techniques that still required a full Matt Varnish and a special metallic Gold ink for the Piccolo brand name.
