New research* with UK consumers reveals that more than half (52%) would be prepared to pay more for recyclable packaging.
The findings highlighted consumers’ commitment to a move toward planet-friendly packaging. Of those prepared to pay more, one-third said they would pay an additional 1% to 4% of the purchase price of their goods to receive them in sustainable packaging, and almost two-fifths (39%) said they would pay a 5% premium.
Eight per cent said they would pay between 6% and 9% more and 15% said they would be prepared to pay between 10% and 20% more.
The survey also showed that despite some efforts by the industry to move away from single-use plastic packaging, the majority of those surveyed (76%) do not think some brands are doing enough to reduce their use and move to other types of packaging.
More than two-thirds (67%) said they want to see greater use of paper-based only packaging that can go into curbside recycling collections, and 54% said that they want brands to stop using single-use plastic completely.
Recyclable plastic packaging is however evolving year after year. Technology is constantly being innovated, which leads to better opportunities for packaging suppliers like ourselves to pass on these innovations to our customers.
For example, mono-material packaging is 100% recyclable. The only problem was that it was hard to add features such as zippers that could be made of the same material and therefore be recyclable too. So, it often meant that initially, customers would have to go without.
Thanks to research within the packaging industry and plastics in general, we are now able to offer these features, which are a huge asset to our mono material Ready2Recycle bags. As consumers are prepared to pay more for recyclable packaging it’s essential that they get value for money.
The reason why the Ready2Recycle range has gained so much popularity since its launch is without question the race to sustainability from both brand owners and retailers alike. We also have a fantastic USP, as we can offer different formats across the whole range, from Stand Up Pouches to Flat Bottom Bags, through to Quad Seal Bags ad BOPP Woven bags. Our Paper Bags are also popular at the moment, owing to their authentic look or for those wanting a vintage look to their sweet packaging.
Pet food in particular has many uses for Ready2Recycle packaging. We work with many brands who are making the switch to mono material bags, and partly it is because it is what their customers want. Plus, if this news is anything to go by, customers will gladly pay extra for the bags, which means it’s never been a better time for businesses to come to us to make the change and move in the right direction.
