Which packaging should I choose for functional treats?

Let’s face it; we love to give our pets treats. Why wouldn’t we? Food is one of the ways we often show our pets love and is an excellent motivator during training.

We can create problems like weight gain if we treat them too often. That is why it’s a good idea to make any treats you give your dog something that serves another purpose – functional treats! This trend is increasing and there is a constant stream of brands getting in touch with us looking for pouches and bags for their products.

With such a wide range of options for packaging for functional pet foods, how is the packaging industry taking advantage of this opportunity?

At Law Print, we are individualising our efforts, playing to our many strengths and expertise, and choosing materials and features that will allow our clients not only to sell products but to commit to taking the first step to contributing to a circular economy.

Functional ingredients in pet foods have unique nutritional benefits in terms of general wellness or address specific health concerns such as digestion, joint and cartilage function, immune system strength or dental health. These are treats that can do your dog some good, like support dental and coat health or improve joint function.

There are a couple of options when it comes to choosing the right packaging. In terms of formats, pouches are a popular option. Offering a compact structure and lower weight ratio, stand up pouches have increasingly grown in popularity. The variety of closure mechanisms combined with practical improvements to shelf life, waste and reusability strike the perfect balance between packaging form and function.

We provide Quad Seal bags and Flat Bottom bags, like the one below for the Canagan brand. This customer has recently launched with us a range of functional dry food, targeted explicitly to dental health, and we worked with them to supply packaging for their very successful food.

Quad Seal bags or 4 Corner Seal bags are designed with two gussets, increasing potential branding space to 4 graphic panels. The four-corner seal design provides excellent reinforcement, allowing you to fill bags with more product, whilst the flat base helps the bag to stand upright when filled.

Flat Bottom bags require less material than the more traditional quad seal format. The packaging structure also utilises space more effectively, allowing for the same volume of product. With all the on-shelf advantages of printed cartons, flat bottom bags offer a stable, free-standing structure with five graphic panels for increased branding.

As pet food becomes increasingly specialised, with manufacturers catering to consumers’ desires to meet the individual needs of their pets, functional ingredients are becoming more of a trend than ever.

And don’t worry, if your business is not quite ready for fully printed bags or pouches just yet! We can also supply you with some generic packaging that you or your end customers can add labels to for their product.

With this in mind, Law Print are continually innovating to improve packaging for our clients. Features such as handles, easy-tear options and resealable zippers are considerable pluses to the bags we supply.

And supply we do – all across the world. Functional treats are widespread across the globe, and we’re in a position where we can provide not only in the UK and Europe but in the US, Australia and Asia.
