Insects are nature’s primary recyclers. They break down waste biomass and in the process recapture and concentrate valuable nutrients such as proteins, oils, fibre and minerals.

At Law Print, we’ve noticed that insect protein is making its way into pet food more and more, and we’ve also been inundated with queries and requests regarding the most sustainable pet food packaging for this growing trend.

Insects form the foundation of the food chain. They are super nutritious and therefore in the natural diet of most farmed animals and pets. Leveraging insects’ role in nature has the potential to break our produce-consume-dispose food system and create more circular and sustainable nutrient loops towards better, more natural and sustainable food.

Around 2,000 insect species are already consumed by humans and domestic animals across the globe as part of their regular diet, due to their high protein content, favourable fats, minerals, and vitamins.

In terms of value, the edible insects market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 26.5% from 2020 to 2027 to reach $4.63 billion by 2027. Moreover, in terms of volume, the edible insects market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 28.5% from 2020 to 2027 to reach 1,398.90 KT by 2027.

The growth in the edible insects market is mainly driven by factors such as growing greenhouse gas emissions from livestock and poultry, the high nutritional value of insects, low environmental impact over their entire life cycle, and low risk of transmitting zoonotic diseases.

Sustainability is extremely important to those who choose to provide insect protein to their pets, which is why our PE/PE recyclable flat bottom and quad seal bags are the perfect choices for these projects. Depending on your product, pouches are also an option, specifically for pet treats.

To highlight the use of our packaging within this industry, we have recently worked with the Yora brand who is on a mission with its new sustainable pet food made from insect protein. With Law Print leading the way in sustainable packaging, it was a perfect match!

We supplied them with Ready2Recycle PE/PE Flat Bottom bags which require less material than the more traditional quad seal format. The packaging structure also utilises space more effectively, allowing for the same volume of product. With all the on-shelf advantages of printed cartons, flat bottom bags offer a stable, free-standing structure with 5 graphic panels for increased branding.

If you did want to go down the Quad Seal bags or 4 Corner Seal bags route, this is an alternative option too. They’re designed with two gussets, increasing potential branding space to 4 graphic panels. The four-corner seal design provides great reinforcement, allowing you to fill bags with more product, whilst the folded base helps the bag to stand upright when filled. They’re also offered in PE/PE mono-material structure for the ultimate sustainable solution.

The rise of this industry is startling in pace, and each day we receive more and more enquiries. If you’re in the pet food industry and looking to make the change into insect protein, be assured that we’ll be able to help with the packaging side of things.

If your brand is looking to invest in quality packaging, we will guide you through the entire print process. Providing recommendations along the way to improve efficiency, reduce costs and add untold value to the end product.
